Simply put – it is asking for what you want in exchange for what you are willing to give. If you are a great negotiator you get what you want and if you are not a great negotiator, you do not get what you want and settle for much less than what you want.

Do you feel that you are a great negotiator or do you feel you are a poor negotiator?

Here is the first step most people miss.

The first step is to know that you are negotiating all the time. Every moment you are interacting with people, you are negotiating. You may not call it negotiation but that is exactly what you are doing.

People who are poor negotiators do not realize that they are negotiating. People who are great negotiators are always focused on what they want and every time they are talking to people, they are asking for what they want. They are finding out ways they can get what they are looking for.

So let me ask you – are you a great negotiator?

If you are not a great negotiator then the next time you are interacting with people, notice whether you are willing to ask for what you want or not. I promise you that if you focus on what you want you will find a way to ask for what you want!

This is just the first step in becoming a skillful negotiator.

Here is the problem – most presenters go quickly into solving the problem for their prospects. The prospect does not feel that you have really listened to his or her problem!

So what should you do?

Empathize and create a connection with the audience first. The audience wants to know – do you really understand his or her situation? Do you truly care? What challenges have you had to handle that gives me a sense of confidence that you know how to help me?
