First Step in Negotiating

What is negotiation?

Simply put – it is asking for what you want in exchange for what you are willing to give. If you are a great negotiator you get what you want and if you are not a great negotiator, you do not get what you want and settle for much less than what you want.

Do you feel that you are a great negotiator or do you feel you are a poor negotiator?

Here is the first step most people miss.

The first step is to know that you are negotiating all the time. Every moment you are interacting with people, you are negotiating. You may not call it negotiation but that is exactly what you are doing.

People who are poor negotiators do not realize that they are negotiating. People who are great negotiators are always focused on what they want and every time they are talking to people, they are asking for what they want. They are finding out ways they can get what they are looking for.

So let me ask you – are you a great negotiator?

If you are not a great negotiator then the next time you are interacting with people, notice whether you are willing to ask for what you want or not. I promise you that if you focus on what you want you will find a way to ask for what you want!

This is just the first step in becoming a skillful negotiator.

  1. Great topic, Minesh.

Knowing what you want it key to getting what you want. So many times I see people begin conversations and they are not clear in what they need or want. They either have not thought it through or are not clearly conveying their points.
This is also a great reason that business owners need great consultants/brokers/attorneys/planners/coaches/etc.. Those professionals that have been through the process before know what questions to ask and know how to ask for what their clients need.
